2.1. National Spinal Cord Injury Association

Founded in 1948, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association was one the nation's oldest and largest civilian organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Americans living with the results of spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) and their families. The NSCIA mission included educating and empowering survivors of spinal cord injury and disease to achieve and maintain the highest levels of independence, health and personal fulfillment.

In the early part of the twenty first century, the organization disbanded due to a number of unfortunate circumstances that impacted on their ability to fund and advance their programs. At that time their membership and a large number of the organization's struggling chapters were folded into the United Spinal Association. Today these chapters are enjoying greatly increased membership and expanded missions and outreach.
